This illustration was done for last years’ Women’s Equality Day poster. The holiday originally commemorates the passing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution giving women the right to vote. The holiday has broadened to focus on other women’s achievements. I chose Capt. Nicole Malachowski, the first female pilot to fly with as a member of the elite U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Thunderbirds. I used a Department of Defense photo as reference. The background image is taken from a photograph of suffragette Sophia Loebinger (Library of Congress).
